"Get Wild with Wild Rice" Recipe Contest

Let Your Culinary Creativity Pay Off... The Minnesota Cultivated Wild Rice Council is looking for inspired cooks to compete in its 10th Annual Recipe Contest. Winning recipes will be featured in the 2019-2020 wild rice recipe brochure.

Recipes must be original creations of the submitter and include a minimum of:

  • 1/4 cup of precooked wild rice per serving
  • one of our sponsor products (see below)
You may enter one recipe per category (appetizer, soup, salad, entree, side); however, each recipe must be submitted separately. Recipes must be typed in the following order:

  1. Developer's name and contact information (address, phone, email).
  2. Recipe title.
  3. Recipe category (appetizer, soup, salad, entree, side).
  4. Sponsors included in the recipe.
  5. Amount of precooked wild rice used in the recipe.
  6. Ingredient measure along with specific ingredient - to be listed in the order called for in the directions.
  7. Directions - provide complete preparation directions including cooking/baking time, temperature, and type/size of cookware/bakeware.
  8. Number of servings.

We'll Be the Judge... Recipes will be judged on: taste, ease of preparation, use of wild rice/sponsor products, and creativity. Preference will be given to those recipes utilizing multiple sponsor products, fresh or gluten-free options, and those that can be easily demonstrated (recipes requiring stove top/microwave cooking preparation or no heating). Up to 16 finalists will be selected.

What's In It For You... Finalists will be noted in our 2019-2020 brochure and will each receive 3 pounds of wild rice and a choice of two admission tickets to the Minnesota State Fair, one wild rice t-shirt/cap, or a signed copy of "Saga of the Grain."

Finalists have two chances to win cash prizes. A taste test will be conducted in September and the $500 Grand Prize will be awarded by a panel of judges. Also in September, all finalists will be posted on our website for the People's Choice online contest to celebrate National Rice Month. America will vote for its favorite recipe and one lucky winner will receive the $250 People's Choice prize!

In addition, finalists have the chance to be selected as an Automatic Qualifier in the 2019 World Food Championships and compete for a piece of a total purse of $350,000 in cash and prizes. Your registration will be covered, as well as an option for additional cash stipends after the event.

Start submitting your recipe creations online beginning May 9. Entries will be accepted from May 9 to June 9, 2019.
